Assault Android Cactus: Achievement - Stop Shooting Yourself
Assault Android Cactus (PC/Steam)
Version 150922d (2015 Sep 22)
Achievement: Stop Shooting Yourself
Description: Lead the laser turret to defeat Medulla
Stage 5-5: Medulla
Character used: Cactus (though this Achievement can be done with any character)
So, Assault Android Cactus is finally out of Early Access. And among the other additions to the full release version... the game now has Steam Achievements! =)
Funny story, I actually got the laser to defeat Medulla back when Medulla was new to the game (in Early Access), mainly because I was curious to see if it could be done. =) I don't think I ever mentioned this to the Witch Beam team, though... so I was both a bit amused and surprised when I saw it in the list of Achievements. I guess the Witch Beam team had been thinking along the same lines as me. =)
Anyway...
"Stop Shooting Yourself" is earned at the end of Phase 7 of the Medulla battle (the Nexus Core phase). If you're having trouble getting to Phase 7, I'd recommend taking a look at my "guide to beating Medulla" video (I'll include a link to that video near the bottom of this description), which shows some Low-Intermediate strategies for beating Medulla with Cactus.
In this Achievement video, I used some different strategies than in my "guide" video, including some mid-to-high-Intermediate strategies. The important thing, though, is getting to Phase 7, so as long as you can get there, it doesn't really matter how. =)
The first time I thought about how to get the laser to defeat Medulla, the strategy that immediately came to mind was to get to the opposite side of the core (so that the core is between you and the laser) after the laser appears. However, moving to the opposite side does take some time, and during that time, the laser won't be damaging Medulla.
So... it turns out that the easiest way of increasing the amount of damage the laser does to Medulla... is to stay on the same side. The laser will fire at you even after you get knocked down, so if you don't immediately get up again, the laser will do a lot more damage to Medulla. =)
The main Phase 7 strategy I use in this video is to find one of the six enemy spawn locations closest to Medulla's core... and stand between it and the core. If a snake appears behind you, let it hit you, and it'll do a pretty good amount of damage to Medulla as well. If a laser appears behind you, just ignore it and keep attacking the core, and when the laser (or something else) knocks you down, the laser will damage Medulla instead.
Once Medulla's health is low enough, stay at one of these six locations, stop attacking, let yourself get knocked down, and just stay down. The laser will appear periodically, then fire at you and hit Medulla instead... and if you did things right, it'll end up defeating Medulla for you, earning you the "Stop Shooting Yourself" Achievement. =)
So anyway, here's the video! Hope it helps, and good luck!
