A multi-award-winning director with an impressive catalog of films, Jay Roach is perhaps best known for his work on the likes of Austin Powers, Meet the Parents, Bombshell, and more. Now, the director is back in the comedic realm on the big screen with The Roses, his first feature comedy directing effort since 2012's The Campaign.
Starring the incredible British duo of Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, The Roses is based on the 1981 novel The War of the Roses and a modernized remake of the 1989 comedy starring Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito. With an ensemble cast including the likes of Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon; the directing prowess of Roach, and one of the best modern screenwriters in Tony McNamara of The Favourite and Poor Things fame, this is one comedy you don't want to miss.
Ahead of The Roses' late August theatrical release, director Roach sat with Collider's Steve Weintraub to chat about the movie. The two spoke about Roach's recent acting cameo in Barry, why the 1989 movie is worth remaking now, whether much of the film ended up on the cutting room floor, and even about the potential for a fourth Austin Powers movie.
