The Ayaneo Kun is a gaming handheld running Windows 11. The 2024 version features an AMD 8840U processor, 32 GB DDR5 RAM (dual-channel), and a 2 TB SSD. CrystalDiskMark tests show write speeds of 6545.09 MB/s and read speeds of 6979.38 MB/s. With an 8.4-inch display (2460 x 1600 pixels, 500 nits brightness), the Kun is relatively large. It also includes WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.
Compared to the budget-friendly Powkiddy X55, the Kun stands out as a premium device, priced at €1329—enough to build a high-end gaming setup. The packaging reflects its premium status. While Ayaneo claims an ergonomic design, the 950g weight makes extended gaming sessions a challenge, especially for users with smaller hands.
For connectivity, the Kun includes two USB4 Type-C ports (for data transfer and docking), one USB-A (USB 3.2 Gen 2), and a microSD card slot for extra storage. The built-in stand is useful, especially during long sessions, and makes it compact enough for use on airplane tray tables.
The device lacks an OLED screen and runs at 60 Hz, unlike competitors offering 144 Hz displays. However, it covers 130% of the sRGB color space and 90% of DCI-P3. The display has thick bezels and a reflective surface, making outdoor gaming harder. A front-facing camera supports Windows Hello for facial recognition, and a fingerprint sensor is also included.
Battery life varies based on usage. The 75 Wh (19,500 mAh) battery can last several hours, but power consumption must be reduced for extended play. Charging is via USB-C.
The Kun has two touchpads, which some users find problematic due to accidental touches. They can be disabled or programmed for specific actions. The left touchpad supports scrolling, while the right controls the cursor. Four rear buttons are also customizable.
Inside, the Ayaneo Kun runs on a Ryzen 7 8840U CPU (8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.1 GHz) with an AMD Radeon 780M GPU and an AI-powered NPU (16 TOPS). Benchmarks in different TDP settings show:
54W TDP: PC Mark Extended: 5,626; Standard: 5,611
30W TDP: PC Mark Extended: 5,733; Standard: 5,637
15W TDP: PC Mark Extended: 5,057; Standard: 5,284
Power draw can be reduced to 5W, and the cooling system (“KUNPeng”) efficiently dissipates heat via vents on top.
For gaming, the Kun features large joysticks and customizable shoulder buttons. The joysticks are claimed to have no dead zones, and sensitivity can be adjusted. LED lighting around the joysticks can be customized and used as a battery indicator. The device also includes a dual-gyroscope for motion control and haptic feedback (“Leading HD Linear Motors”). The ABXY buttons are swappable for different layouts.
Audio is delivered through two “HyperSound” speakers with spacious sound chambers. Two built-in microphones filter ambient noise for in-game communication or calls. Headphones can be connected via Bluetooth or the 3.5mm jack.
Ayaneo offers accessories like a docking station, protective case, and screen protectors. A 4G module is planned but not yet available. The Kun is upgradeable, supporting up to an 8 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD.
Compared to the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally X, and Lenovo Legion Go (which has an 8.8-inch display), the Kun is larger. However, its 60 Hz screen lags behind competitors. Ayaneo frequently releases new models, and even during the Kun’s launch, the Ayaneo 3 was already announced.
The Kun starts at $999 for the 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD version, with the 32 GB RAM / 2 TB SSD model costing $1,329. It comes in three colors: White Silk (with blue accents), Silver Wing (darker elements on top), and Black Feather (lighter shoulder buttons).
