Back the Log Off! - Episode 20: Blather, Mince and Repeat
Originally recorded: June 17, 2022

Huh, 20 episodes and 2 games. If my estimates are right, I should be able to continue this pattern for one more loop, but it seems unlikely that it'll hold to the end of the year. Either way, this didn't feel quite as special to me. Maybe it's because of the circumstances of this session. I knew going in that it would essentially serve as my penance for my hubris in the last recording. I was kind of hoping in the back of my mind that the game might show mercy upon me and remember the progress I'd already made, which would've shaved at least half and hour off my wait time. But sadly, DS-era save functions clearly weren't that advanced.
As such, I decided to take the replay portion of this stream off from the voiceovers. Honestly, as much as I'm enjoying the game, I was still demoralized by the revelation that I would essentially have to replay that entire long segment. On the plus side, I did get to experiment with the save functionality again. It's not quite as user-friendly as what The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles offered me, but it did remind me why I preferred to stick to the game's built-in checkpoint saves in the first place. I just hope that game overs don't erase your progress. The game seems to treat its regular save feature like a suspend state, as opposed to a proper save. I guess I should hope that I never have to find out what happens in that case, but being surprised by the outcome is never fun.
Episode 2's conclusion was still pretty interesting. If I hadn't inadvertently spoiled myself on Edgeworth's fate in future games in the series, I'd actually be relatively convinced that he might consider changing sides after his little adventure as a defense attorney's apprentice. Though... why did the game seem to forget when he had to stand in for Phoenix back in Trials and Tribulations? Granted, they seem to be avoiding any and all direct mention of Wright himself in these games, so that might just be part and parcel for the Investigations games in the first place. That final defeat animation on the culprit was just barely worth the wait though. Absolutely fantastic.
And it looks like Episode 3 is going to be a flashback case. I love stuff like this... which always strikes me as weird. Prequels generally make me roll my eyes, but couch it as a flashback and I'm immediately hooked. Seeing Tyrell Badd again also made me smile. Also, being able to play with performing "younger" voices for existing characters in the game just by raising the pitch of the voices I was using for them was pretty fun. Jury's out on whether or not that'll be more relaxing on the ol' larynx in the long-run though.
This recording had a significant advantage over every other one I've done for Back the Log Off! so far, simply because I didn't have to voices for so much of it. That also gave me a chance to get a little more freeform with my commentary... and I sort of feel like I squandered that chance. Oh well, I'm not sure what I'll do with this series after my current slate of games... maybe I can play some stuff will allow me to riff a little more in the future. But given what this series is likely going to turn into, well, I wouldn't count on it.
