Bakame-Death [バカメ・デス] Game Sample - X68000
A strange, very obscure game that I can't find any real information about anywhere, but nevertheless, it's a fun little puzzler which involves using various die (dice) and is credited to Taito and Surpasser-Gin; it's really what Altron's "Rox" should have been, with a simplified approach on numbers and is a combo of Tetris and Magical Drop, with a smidge of its own originality. It's dubbed a "Shooting Puzzle Game".
After the mildly suggestive title screen, you are whisked away to a rectangle of doom where you play with some guy (I have no clue who he is) who holds a die and must stay alive as long as possible by throwing matching die at the ceiling, eliminating them and adding what's removed from play to your "tray" at the bottom of the screen. The tray can hold up to six dice at once, and different elimination pairs allow you to further attack the encroaching stack (the pairs are presented in a rather self-explanatory fashion after the title screen).
Naturally, there are six sides on a die, so the most powerful combination is getting 1-6 in order (numbers 1-6 but, creepily enough, "Shi", the kanji for "Death", somehow replaces the number 4), but there are several other potent combinations which allow you to eliminate a certain number of "lines". The pairs are broken into four distinct groups: Zorome (Matching Dice or Identical Numbers), 2 of a kind or 2 things in common (having at least two different die and similar traits; for instance, 22-DD-66 has at least two different dice and also shares the fact that there are two in each set, another example is 111-666 as it has at least two pair and there of a kind), Sequential (1-2-3, 1-2-3-D, 1-2-3-D-5), and "21" (666-3, 1-2-3-D-5-6, 2-3-D-4-5-1, etc.).
Every so often, the background will change as well as the blood-curdling noise your hero (?) makes when he removes lines from play. The speed will pick up and you'll also start seeing things you aren't familiar with like demon heads that can be crushed to turn all current dice into your color of choice. You lose when you get crushed (which leaves you in a puddle of blood). The visuals aren't great and the music gets old after a while, but it is relatively addictive. This is an example of the game which stops after reaching over one million points. Enjoy.
