Cave Crowds [ケイブクラウドス] Game Sample - X68000
This is another unusual X68K game which there seems to be practically no information for, though the game credits Taito for one of its music tracks and there are two different versions of the game, a regular version and a "Comiket" version (which seems to predate the Non-Comiket one). It is probably an old doujin game. I'm not sure of how many differences exist between the Comiket and Non-Comiket version, but the Comiket version has two types of cutscenes you can watch: "Japanese" and "Overseas". The "Japanese" cutscenes are done with simple anime stills. The "Overseas" cutscenes are more generic, using what appears to be a largely photo-realistic apartment interior which fills up with more worldly possessions as you advance (and lacks dialogue and music).
The game is simple. Being dubbed a "Strategic Active Exploration Game", you are in a cave and have to destroy all the "red" snakes to advance. You, the player, have the ability to climb steep walls, hop, and use three tools. The first allows you to erode walls. The second allows you to repair cracks or create a barricade or bridge to walk across. The third allows you to zoom out to see the whole area, which is a useful ability. While you can damage red snakes with your abilities, there are far too many to destroy manually. This is where the strategy comes in; there are blue snakes who can be unleashed to defeat the red snakes. Red snakes move about somewhat randomly and can deteriorate walls that they touch, while blue snakes mostly just fall down, seep through cracks, and occupy holes. When and where you let the in blue and red snakes is crucial to your survival. Additionally, if snakes infiltrate the glowing box you start in, you'll lose all your lives automatically.
This is a video showing some of the game from the "Comiket" version (saw no reason to play the normal one over this). The visuals aren't anything special, but the music in the game is awesome. Enjoy.
