Farland Story 2 [ファーランドストーリー2] Game Sample - SNES/SFC
Not to be confused with the PC-98 game, "Farland Story Denki: Arc Ou no Ensei" (which is the proper second game in the series), Farland Story 2 (or "Farland Story 2: Dance of Destruction") for the SFC is a side-story which takes place after the second game. Part of a long-running series of strategy games which are popular in Japan, China, and Korea, I've had the first SFC Farland Story for a while now, but had ordered the sequel not too long ago (about a month or two) to finish the set. Most of the PC-98 titles have been fan-translated.
Released towards the end of 1995, the game takes place roughly 20 years after the end of the first game. Arc (translated as "Ark" in the manual), who is now a king and is with his love Ferio, has brought peace to all of Felsaria until one day, a small country on the outskirts of Ionia known as Val desires power and starts conquering neighboring regions, growing in its power and influence. Now a threatening entity that deems itself the Valdez Empire, they sought world domination. Led by the wicked king, Nereido, they reach a roadblock in their world conquest in the form of Arc and his kingdom, but have heard rumors that a young girl holds the key to crushing all in their path.
The young girl in question is Salina, a dancer from the ancient Kentoone clan that possess strange powers. They speculate she can execute the forbidden "Dance of Death", which is declared one of the greatest and most powerful abilities in the world. If they can get Salina to perform this dance, they may be able to destroy an entire country in one fell swoop. With the help of Nereido's grimy prime minister, Gibogera, they kidnap Salina and plan to use her to learn about the "Dance of Death", but there's one thing they didn't count on; Nereido's powerful "son", Liad (spelled Liad in the manual, but stated as Riad most everywhere), who loves Salina and won't let them manipulate Salina for such a terrible purpose. He breaks free from the castle and escapes with Salina, and his journey begins as he searches for the help of King Arc.
There are some plot twists as with any decent game with a plot remotely worth caring about, with plenty of characters and a decent bit of dialogue between stages. The audio/visuals were enhanced somewhat over the previous SFC Farland Story (and some characters look pre-rendered like Donkey Kong Country), though the gameplay is mostly the same and the game, while good looking, lacks pizazz. You use many different characters from a variety of classes (Dancer, Wizard, Lord, Sairayn, Sailor, Wo-Wolf, Snow Soul, Summons Summoner, etc.) who can equip different weapons and skills. The game requires a little strategy from time-to-time, though it's generally not very difficult overall. As with some strategy games, if the hero, Liad, dies, it's automatically Game Over. The game is SNES/SFC Mouse Compatible. We have a video of the introduction and 15 minutes of battle footage. Enjoy.
