Bargain Bin Debasement, Part #4 - Folklore (2007) (PS3) (Game Republic)
Recorded on real PlayStation 3 hardware.
The relatively obscure PS3 action adventure Folklore from 2007 became a mini-Holy Grail for me during the last console generation. I always meant to pick the game up because it seemed like such an interesting and unique title for the platform in question, but by the time I got a PS3 this early release for the system was a bit hard to come by.
Many years later, I have now finally picked a used copy in good condition for a reasonable price (roughly $35). The visuals and combat mechanics are certainly distinctive, and there's also a bit more storytelling, world building and dialogue (most of it text-based) than I had expected. It's always interesting to see Japanese developers tackle Western themes and environments, and Folklore's uncanny H.P.-Lovecraft-meets-Lewis-Carroll style is still not quite like anything else in console gaming. Oh, and the cover art is awesome too...
