Recorded on real Xbox hardware.

The original Halo's level design is an infamous mess of sprawling outdoor areas and identical-looking corridors; which makes it all the more surprising that Bungie somehow managed to create one of the FPS genre's enduring masterpieces with the fourth level in the game. The Silent Cartographer effortlessly transitions between a variety of memorable gameplay scenarios - storming the beach, infiltrating the Covenant installation, fighting towards the exit etc. - without any pacing problems whatsoever, and the whole thing is just a ton of fun to play from start to finish.

Halo: Combat Evolved has been released and re-released a number of times during the last two decades, but before picking up a used copy last week I had actually never played the original Xbox version. There are some noticeable frame rate drops in heavy combat scenarios and the FOV is rather claustrophobic, but the game does still run somewhat better on original hardware than the first PC port did on my then newly purchased gaming rig in 2003.
