Battlefield 3 - going out of bounds in Fear No Evil
Yep, we glitched Battlefield 3 with Kazooie again. We started off our session by playing a tank level called Fear No Evil, which seemed like a questionable decision at first. But we did manage to find an Out of Bounds spot in it that's most likely new too, so I guess it wasn't all that bad.
We found out later that it's trivially easy to go out of map in this level anyway. If you drive forward long enough and then backtrack, the previous area has unloaded and you can just drive out of bounds effortlessly.
However, the advantage of the new OoB spot we found is that it lets the player leave the map close to the 2nd half of the level... and thus, it opened up the possibility of worthwhile sequence breaks. Gasp! So, we decided to look into the possibility of skips, and here are the grisly results.
---
0:00 - near the start of the level, when someone starts shooting at your tank, don't follow your ally around the corner. Instead drive to the right over the rubble. If you are lucky and manage to get over, and are quick enough to get past the limited amount of "mission fail" boundary as well, you're then fully out of bounds.
0:31 - going to the bank early is possible, but it's all unloaded. Going all the way inside the bank seems to load some new assets inside there, but other than that, nothing seems to happen.
1:13 - fortunately, the loading trigger for the bank is actually nearby and can be hit from out of bounds. You can even hit the loading trigger in the process of going out of bounds if you drive from left enough, as seen in this video clip. Going out of bounds from the left side is harder, though.
(Alternatively, once fully out of bounds, you can back up into the area left of the rubble to hit the loading trigger in a completely reliable way, but that is not shown on the video.)
In any case, hitting the trigger enables you to reach the bank when it's loaded but still early enough that no enemy tanks have spawned there. At this point we thought: could this be a potential fight skip?
1:43 - nope! Because Battlefield 3 is a modern military shooter, you are sniped instantly by a non-existing tank if you dare to approach the bank right now. Because scripted set pieces are clearly more important than player initiative in a video game.
2:01 - just to make sure, we tried out the alternative entrances to the bank as well. But it seems the entire front of the bank is rigged to blow you up in a nonsensical way if you try to proceed.
(Not on the vid: going part-way under the bank is possible as well, but you can't reach any triggers in front of the bank from there, so that's a dead end too.)
2:42 - so no, the skip doesn't work out. As a consolation, here are some nice sights from the OoB. This game really has some stylish looking out of map scenery, gotta say.
Here's the first part of the level, unloaded. Some fire effects are hovering around; the only reminder of the real-life war scenario that once happened in these grim coordinates.
3:15 - here's the building leading up to the bank, viewed from outside while everything is unloaded. There's another "temporal warp" outside the building, hitting which makes the sun position change.
3:48 - the ground more or less continues even beyond the limit where graphics have stopped. A half-collapsed building detail.
4:13 - for some reason the ground becomes very bumpy while driving out of bounds. Also, there are invisible pits where your tank can fall into.
