A great Space Harrier-esque game with power-ups and plenty of bad guys to shoot. Hiromi Tengenji (The girl protagonist) also appears in Namco X Capcom. You can gain various power-ups, play several bonus levels, and even fly freely on some levels as you would in Space Harrier. If you want a SH alternative, you can't go wrong with BF. It's got an awesome soundtrack, a hot girl, and more variety in both what you can do and how enemies are presented and fight than the age-old SH, though to be fair, SH was much older when it debuted; it just hasn't changed much.
