I always like me a Bonk game. I never really go out of my way to play Bonk like I would a Mario, Sonic, or Final Fantasy title, but when he's around, I'll play. This is the second installment of the game for Gameboy and, while sharing a name with its Turbo Graphix 16 counterpart, the two have different stories. This time around our hero happens to be on the moon. Why there's a caveman on the moon is beyond me, but maybe Conspiracy Jim would know. As he's looking out over earth, lizard King Drool rips earth in half....
I'm having a hard time suspending belief for this....
So Bonk rushes back to Earth to save it and to kick King Drool in the butt. By the way, what's with all the generic bad kings in games? Krool, Kool, Deedeedee, Wart... You get the idea.
Bonk titles fill an interesting little niche in video game history. They belong to a group of "Mascot" games. Up until the end of the console wars, major companies would release system specific games, usually they were made or produced by top level companies and would show off or feature some of the enhanced capabilities of the system they were developed for. Everyone knows Mario and Sonic, but the second tier of mascots included Crash Bandicoot, Bubsy, Rayman, Gex, and Bonk. Bonk was the Mascot for the Turbo Graphix 16, the NEC platform during the 16 bit days. It was an awesome but under-appreciated system whose popularity was marred by lack of marketing funds, poor advertising, and a second-rate mascot.
All that aside, Bonk games are generally fun and this Gameboy title is no exception. I have no outright complaints this time around, luckily. I do play fun games once in a while.
