How can I put this....This game should be in a history book about video games. As both a collector and avid gamer, I also consider myself a scholar and expert on video games. Felix the Cat is a shining example of stereotypical platforming mediocrity. This is a really fun game, but simply put, this could have been about any character using any circumstance. It's so formulaic, so rigidly cast, it does not matter who the cast is, it would play the same. Let me give some examples:
The Story: Protagonist (Felix) is on an adventure to rescue his Heroine (girlfriend kitty) from the Antagonist (mad scientist).
Game play: Collect obligatory token item and after one hundred, gain a life. Also, gain power-ups throughout your adventure of six stages, each with a boss character.
Everything else: Give it generic platform music and basic platforming controls and you have the next big hit. If I closed my eyes (and I probably could since this was one of the easiest games I've played) I could have pretended this was Master Higgins, Mario, Bonk, Barbie, or whoever.
With all that being said, I don't hate the game. On the contrary, I enjoyed it. I would never have bought this retail when I was young since the entire game literally took about twenty minutes to beat and I only died twice. It took my wife and her friend longer to straighten out the voice chat issue they were having in Steam than it took for me to beat this.
There are hundreds of platform titles across many subgenres and many play an important role to the history of gaming. This title should go down as the formula to create a vanilla platform game.
