SHANK! Shank shank shank! Whenever I see this game I think of Borderlands and Moxxi's second husband and leader of the prison gang. I suppose it's not a terribly bad thing that a game makes you think of a better one. This game is not bad by any means. I really enjoyed this game and once I snag my wireless controller from work, I'm gonna play co-op with my wife.
The game pays homage to the Double Dragon/Streets of Rage style of gameplay, but ramps it up a notch to awesome. This a solid beat-em-up with a variety of weapons at your disposal. The fighting, after you beat the game, almost takes on a zen-like quality as you mash 'n slash your way through to the the final showdown with Cesar.
Graphics are hand-drawn style animations that are sharp, crisp, and fluid. The game is fun to watch and even gives picture-in-picture style display to peek in on the action somewhere else. The music is appropriate for the mood and will push along the story in a poignant but not overbearing way.
My only real complaints come in the controls department. I find the handling to be a bit sticky, not as accurate as I would expect from the genre, especially with the wide range of moves at your disposal. For example I would pounce on a person and start beating the hell out of them and while I'm on top of them I will either aim left or right and shoot to take out others nearby, but I have to be extra deliberate with the button presses for him not to shoot in the wrong direction. The same could be said for dodging, juggling, and shooting up or down. I hear they totally revamped the controls for the second and that fact alone is enough to drive me to play the sequel.
I managed to beat the game in under four hours, but with the achievements, modes and unlockables, you could easily spend a whole weekend with the game and get your money's worth.
