Break Quick Man's Stage with this Zip (Mega Man 2, NES) - A Wild Glitch Appears!
Speedrunners use this glitch to zip real fast through a certain section of Quick Man's level in Mega Man 2 for the NES. Using this fairly simple trick will "break" the level such that the graphics do not visually represent the actual layout of the stage. But with just a little practice, anyone can execute this exploit.
After the first section of lasers in Quick Man's level, Mega Man will be at the left side of a long horizontal room - it's the one with those fire torch looking enemies.
Here, you will need to throw a series of Item-1 platforms so that Mega Man can get pushed up into the corner of the ceiling while facing right. It doesn't matter precisely how this is done, as long as Mega Man gets pushed up THROUGH the ceiling while facing right.
Generally, the placement of the last Item-1 platform should be far enough left from the corner of the ceiling so that it will not disappear when Mega Man's head hits the ceiling, but CLOSE enough that Mega Man's full sprite will be under the ceiling.
Once Mega Man gets pushed THROUGH the ceiling he will be fully invisible. Jump then tap LEFT on the D-Pad within 3 to 6 frames, and Mega Man will zip ALL the way to the right side of the room, which saves you some time!
Many speedrunners will briefly tap RIGHT during the zip so that the last flame torch enemy guy will spawn, then they will tap left again to continue the zip. This will "turn the lights on" so to speak. If you DON'T do this, you will have to play the rest of the level on a completely black environment.
Either way, once you finish the zip, Mega Man will be ejected from the ceiling and you can continue right to the next laser section. Keep in mind that since Mega Man is out of bounds, the graphics of the level WILL NOT MATCH the collision of the platforms. In other words, the game shows you platforms that aren't really there.
But, the game WILL briefly show you the real layout of the rooms DURING the screen transitions before the graphics change.
Essentially, once you drop down, hold left to fall to the left side of this room. After falling from the third platform, pause the game just after the screen transition and equip Flash Stopper.
Immediately use Flash Stopper in this second room to avoid death by lasers. Drop down to your right, then move left to transition to the third room. In the third room, hold left and perform a FULL JUMP past the left boundary of the screen. This will wrap Mega Man around to the right side of the room, and he will be back in bounds.
From there, you can simply play the rest of the level like normal.
I learned this trick from a great tutorial by a speedrunner named @duckfist - https://youtu.be/mTGuCMf_Acw?si=_lvsH118r5jydbUO
