Brood's Elder gets destroyed beyond belief by a base level party.
In a regular game, this is the only boss battle (beyond a certain point early on, that is) where Ryu lacks the option of transforming into one of his overpowered dragon forms, so it's likely the only fight where you will find yourself relying on Last Resort / Berserk / Weretiger strategy(/-ies) in order to win efficiently. With a lv. 1 Ryu, I doubt I would've been able to do much in dragon form (even with Force gene access) so it's not much of a loss anyway.
Rei is the centre of our offence owing to his Weretiger skill, and we do want him at the attack formation's peak as usual. He may be 2HKO'd by Double Blow early on in the fight, but so Garr for one simple reason - Garr wants to EX-turn the boss much like Rei, and to achieve the desired 58 speed after 2 Speeds/Robes of Wind, Garr really needs to drop all the heavy armour for lighter stuff, reducing his durability to the absolute bottom. This is why I buff up Garr before Rei - he can't take hits at all in this state while Rei at least has extremely high chances of dodging at least one of the Double Blow strikes due to high innate evasion + Meryleep's 10% bonus.
By turn 2, both Rei and Garr should be EX-turning the boss, which is a guarantee of both stellar offence and stellar auxiliary actions for the rest of the fight. Rei doesn't waste any time in order to go Weretiger at this point, and Garr follows with Influence to keep the party safe.
From here on, it's just defensive buffs and healing, the former including also Force Armour-cast Barriers on the party members. Spells like Sirocco can really tear Garr to pieces since he lacks elemental protection of any kind, and casting the spell once allows Garr to cling to life if he chances to be victim to one of Sirocco/Inferno/Mjollnir. Two Force Armours and the damage becomes laughable.
I suppose this is a testament to BoF3 being a very buff-reliant game, especially if you count Ryu's dragon boosts and Berserk/Weretiger ones to be "buffs" in some way. Otherwise, Last Resort and War Shout and the like still have very potent utility in a regular run (too bad about the lack of War Shout here but there are always the farmable Vodka Shots).
With Elder defeated, the party is now ready for the final stretch of this challenge! We face four gruesome bosses there, featuring one last solo battle Ryu needs to face on his lonesome. Will we succeed? How long will the fights even take? I can't wait to find out.
