First boss battle fought with Adult Ryu, as well as the only boss that we have to face before we get access to the world map whose main benefit is, of course, Faerie Village access for a lot of really broken stuff at this point of the game.
Ryu is a big man now, which mechanics-wise manifests itself in the boy having perfect hit rates on his physical attacks instead of the old 95% (much like Nina and Rei), he has 2% more dodge (8% over 6%) and he seems to be more likely to randomly launch pre-emptive attacks against enemy parties (Rei seems to have the highest stat for this, Momo and Peco the lowest, but how exactly that works in practice I haven't got the faintest idea). Besides Ryu's slight statistical changes (frankly useless when he still has 20 HP and 11 AP as a lv. 1 dood), there aren't any big changes - in a normal game players would find equipment that lets Ryu become way faster (this was rather hard to accomplish in the first half of the game with all the heavy armour being so effective), but defence is preferable to speed on many occasions in this challenge, definitely in this battle.
Dragon Zombie really is bad news for Ryu, and Garr should be prepared to solo this at some point into the fight, but he should do all right if you don't neglect him with all the gear from rare enemy drops like Flame Shield and Magma Armour. The reason why Ryu doesn't survive well here is Bone Dance being AoE damage, plus there being only two characters to hurt so Ryu has higher chances to be targeted with that as well.
That's why it's top priority for Ryu to buff up Garr first, and then he could see if he could last for a couple turns after using Last Resort so that he could contribute to the damage output a little bit.
Speaking of longterm preparation for this fight, Ryu and Garr should've both been inoculated against status for this battle, as getting confused by Bone Dance would be the worst things that could happen to the party here and the surest way to find yourself gazing at the game over screen.
The zombie is weak to fire and super-weak to Holy - if for some odd reason, somebody has gained 5 levels under Hondara or Garr is at lv. 26 (say, because of Lava Men grinding before the tower), you can actually one-shot it with Kyrie. It's not an option for our challenge either, but properly levelled Ryus with decent Int and AP scores could also use Restore when transforming with the help of the Eldritch gene.
The only decent way to penetrate the boss's weaknesses is to have Garr use his special Pyrokinesis (enemy skill Flame Strike clone that is unique to him). He runs out of AP after seven of these, but it should be enough or almost enough to end the battle.
As long as we don't forget to heal up on time, this shouldn't be too bad, but Garr has to cope with doing it alone, too.
And thus, we unlock the world map and with it the Faerie Village, letting us shortly start breaking the game in some rather entertaining ways... The party setups and builds and the strategies they enable will start differing really drastically from the ones showcased in previous videos - it really is a crucial change.
