Clay
Clay boasts two not fully evolved Pokemon on his team, as well as Excadrill with his humongous 135 physical attack. While scary, the best move Excadrill knows is Bulldoze - enough to cause serious pain, but you wouldn't really dare switching a flier in because of Excadrill's Rock Slide access.
Leavanny is a surprisingly good Pokemon to have at this point, available from a rare rustling grass encounter. It may not have a good way to hurt Excadrill directly, but it has a good chance to OHKO Clay's two other Pokemon and set up Reflect to significantly ease up the difficulty of battling Excadrill. Razor Leaf works against both Krokorok and Palpitoad, and Bug Bite can be used against the former, though MiracleSeed's availability and Palpitoad's 4x weakness make Razor Leaf the preferred method of dishing out damage here.
As for Excadrill itself, it misses a 2HKO against plenty of Pokemon that have a good chance to 2HKO it in return, assuming Reflect has been set up. The traded Basculin with Scald taught to it is a good choice, in spite of lacking both Adaptability and a nature that doesn't hinder special attack, as is Deerling with his Jump Kick. In this recording, Excadrill procs a Slash crit, which results in Basculin dying - something that wouldn't have happened without the hax. Deerling just finished what Basculin started.
02:31 Skyla
One of the easiest gym leaders in the entire series IMHO (strangely, a lot of these hail from Unova, at least on my list). Catch a Zebstrika, check that it has been taught 3 electric-type moves and take out all of Skyla's fliers with some sensible combination thereof. Charge Beam helps increase special attack for future OHKOs, Spark targets the defence stat (good against Swoobat, who spams Amnesia, for example) and Volt Switch is the strongest electric-move on Zebstrika's set - it doesn't stay in and loses whatever Charge Beam boosts it may have accumulated beforehand however. Flame Charge is also quite need for outspeeding Swoobat and ensuring we don't get flinchhaxed by Heart Stamp. Unfezant and Swanna don't really get to do much.
04:59 Brycen
He's honestly really easy and not too demanding of strategy regardless of who you want to use (Sawk is a good choice, as is Superpower-tutored Beartic). I went ahead and swept him with Crustle (who gets Shell Smash by tutor). A single Shell Smash doesn't quite grant Crustle either sufficient attack or sufficient speed for a sweep, and two smashes leaves him vulnerable to enemy offence - especially considering how Vanillish threatens with super-effective Mirror Shot. This is why I put up a Light Screen exploiting Prankster's priority, letting Crustle take an extra turn without risking death. Since Vanillish has Acid Armor, Crustle may need to take an extra turn to Shell Smash once more - that's one turn he's not getting attacked though.
Cryogonal and Beartic then both fall to Crustle's boosted attack - Cryogonal is frail enough to be taken out with Bug Bite instead (I forgot I had X-Scissor for some reason).
As you can see, Crustle needs some crazy boosts to do this, and he could always fail with an unlucky Rock Slide miss, which is more likely if Mirror Shot procs an accuracy cut.
07:39 Drayden
The last gym leader is kind of a joke considering both of his Dragon Dance users attack with a _decreased_ priority STAB move (why did they need all the speed then?) and their other moves leave them surprisingly impotent offensively. Beartic can tear a lot of them into pieces with Icicle Crash, but it's so slow that it can't really solo the fight without some support.
Druddigon is a poor matchup for Beartic due to 120 BP Revenge hitting a weakness, and more than sufficient bulk to take a NeverMeltIce-boosted Icicle Crash, so Sawk handles this one - Counter + Rocky Helmet is a good way to slowly take Druddigon down, and the more damage Druddigon inflicts, the more it will hurt back as this Sawk was caught already knowing Counter.
Haxorus doesn't really possess a wide enough movepool to threaten undamaged Beartic (Fraxure went for a DD on his only turn, foregoing his chance to seriously injure Beartic with Dragon Claw), so Beartic wins this matchup after Whimsicott assists with Stun Spore.
Now we prepare for the E4 and the final battles - plural, since this game is so unusual for having such a developed storyline for a Pokemon game.
