Breath of Fire 6 [ブレス オブ ファイア6 白竜の守護者たち] Game Sample: Android/iOS/Windows
--- NOTE: This is the same video for some, but the other one was blocked in "some countries" due to the intro movie, so this is the same footage, without that movie. You can see it on the FB page though. ---
I have finally done it; I went ahead and played BoF6: Guardians of the White Dragon, since it was released earlier this year. There has been a lot of speculation about this game, and rightfully so; while Breath of Fire does not have the same "pedigree" as titles like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, it is a beloved series and kind of like Capcom's treatment of various IPs (such as Mega Man, for example), many were concerned about the future of BoF once the mobile game was announced...this is just my opinion, but wonder no more; you will see and hear enough to where hopefully, your concerns are laid to rest...but I warn you: I would not read what I am about to say if you have even an ounce of remaining care as it relates to Capcom.
Being done by "COG" (Capcom Online Games), BoFVI: Hakuryū no Shugosha-tachi (that's what the Japanese in my video title equates to) "seems" okay at a glance, if you have been reading old Kotaku articles and such. The game does feature certain popular characters...I have no qualms with how Nina, our winged mainstay ever since BoF1, looks and there are appearances from people like Manilo and a couple others. New faces like Peridot are nice. Ryu makes an appearance and he is your "older brother" in this game and was the chief or such of "Dragnier Village" before it was ransacked by the Insidia Empire. You are tasked with finding him, among other things, such as preventing chaos that occurs when white wings go up against dark/black wings; much is seen in the anime movie. Sadly, all of this is done at the start of the game...Ryu's appearance, the movie with Nina and such, your "dragon transformation" (which reminds me of something out of BoF: Dragon Quarter) against a big boss...it all aims to build hype to try to prepare you for the inevitable.
If you see the ratings going around for this game, they are rather poor (around 2.5 out of 5 stars/50ish%)...I don't know if I would say the game is THAT bad, but the game certainly isn't very GOOD. You are quickly brought into "micro-transaction hell" and a generic town hub where you can talk to boring NPCs and do some basic things like repairing your weapons when their durability gets low, crafting new items from a bazillion materials you find (typical mobile stuff, right?) in missions, etc. --- Your town and options expand simply by doing story missions...there isn't anything really involved with it, though some customization exists. Your abilities also expand the further you play into the game, such as being able to change your class from a novice to a slayer or such. Once they pull on your heartstrings with the few introductory elements and stuff like the fishing mini-game, the reality sets in that this game just is not Breath of Fire...it "IS", but it isn't. I suppose I have to say it is just because it uses characters like Ryu and Nina, but I would sooner consider Dragon Quarter a BoF game before I would consider this one...simply because the story of DQ did amount to something that didn't just feel like a generically thrown together "mobile game story" and DQ was trying to be different as a "traditional RPG" whereas BoF6 tries to take traditional elements to pull people in, while having no intention of being more traditional. BoF6 didn't have to be an MMO mobile game.
If the game were a GOOD mobile game, I wouldn't be bothered...however, BoF6 is NOT a good mobile game (Cap has to learn from better ones), and I am not saying that to spite Capcom. As reviews will tell you, the game is incredibly dull even for a mobile MMO. Battles are cluttered repetitive crud and unlike some games that don't "pretend" to have a world (BoF6 only gives you a very generic world and NPCs) like Seven Knights, BoF6s hub is a waste of time and its just a chore you don't need. You can get clothing to look like characters from the past, but it's just a means to milk you, while you deal with a generic battle system where you repetitively go from left to right (in most cases), mash skills constantly to get them to come out, deal with skill "cool downs", etc...the skill sets are basic too and the friend system sucks, as you basically just summon them once per mission to do a generic area attack...though cross-platform multiplayer is interesting...if it works well. The game is incredibly slow and dull and not very rich with a bland story and characters...it lacks soul. The art and music are the only decent things, but they are wasted on this game. The gameplay isn't very appealing.
