Hack9 is part of a "series" of action "Metroidvania" style games centered around exploration, discovery, and using your hacking skills to open terminals and progress further to complete the game. As you can tell just by looking at it, it is HEAVILY inspired by the popular "Cave Story" game that was made sometime ago...there is a lot of speculation surrounding this game that can be read all over the net...the game is thought by some to be "Cave Story 2", it uses the CS engine (though there are varying details about that too), some things were taken out, your main character (code-named "SNORT") is said by some to be a guy that looks like a girl, while others say it is a girl...I can't honestly say that I am all that interested in deciphering what is fact and what is fiction. Given Japan's use of "trap" characters, I can understand the speculation, not that it matters either way to me. If it is a trap, that's fine.

Being developed by "Black Bastard", the game has some very simple visuals, but if you are into the "retro grade" graphics of games like Cave Story and such, you will feel right at home. There are some simple explosion effects with clean animations and the game runs smoothly, but do not expect too much. The sound is actually pretty atmospheric, as you can hear...there are a couple of cool tunes, but the music does exactly as intended...it truly serves to be "background music"; it adds to the experience and exploration, but it doesn't make you want to rock out loud or anything. That isn't necessarily a bad thing.

You collect items that heal, restore MP (used when using certain weapons), get money to buy items, increase your max HP and MP with items (the increase is random, so you may want to save your game before attempting to boost your HP and MP parameters)...and use weapons that function differently. For an example, you have a knife for close-range, a gun for long range, etc.
