I love Breath of Fire. It may be on my top ten, but I think BoF2 would beat it out only slightly. This game first came onto my Radar from my best friend. not long after its release in '94 My buddy, who was also a big RPG fan, was telling me about this title. I borrowed it from him at first then rented it, but didn't get to own a copy of my own until I had enough Birthday money to buy it from Funco Land.
Breath of Fire was released in Japan in 1993 making it Capcom's first RPG. The company was rather reluctant to release the title in the states. Square Enix bid to localize the game and stuck the (in)famous Ted Woolsey to do the localizing. This was before his time working on Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III and it shows. The dialog in the game is very dry, cut, and straight to the point. There isn't much in the way of flourishes that give the characters too much personality, but just enough. They mostly fall flat. I find most of their dialog rather comical.
Graphics are fairly good. This was my first run in the 3/4 isometric view in the form of battles and I was intrigued. My favorite system is the Super Nintendo so I am just pudding for its graphics; the colorful sprites, the character portraits, the fun animations....I love Super Nintendo. Another thing I love about the Super and this game is the music. My two favorite genres of music are metal and game music and most of the time at work I'm listening to one or the other and I will frequently listen to this soundtrack.
Overall, Im glad I spent time with this game. It was the start of a unique franchise. All based in the same universe (sans Dragon Quarter) that would have recurring themes, like a Ryu and a Nina, and dragon transformations and fishing. I learned all my fishing from this game....
guess that's why I'm not a very good fisherman.
