Damn this game was hard! Harder than the first Megaman, which up to this point, I always thought to be the most trying of the series...::mumbles:: ...friggin' cyclops...This game is just hard by design. Some levels, like Dr. Wily's final stage are just so arbitrarily long, it makes no sense. OH, I have a theory as well....
It is my assumption that each games' robots are stronger than the previous. It's an arms race basically. The sequels' bosses were harder then so Megaman learned to slide. Megaman III had even harder bosses, so he equips the Mega buster. This adds difficulty and a somewhat odd pacing feel to the game. You fight four bosses from the first game, then do a stage of Wily's castle and then fight the four from the second game. It's unfortunate 'cause the powers you earn from the first four are worth spit on the second four. I think what happened was that they saw these disparities in boss weaknesses and level designs and over compensated and made a childishly easy sequel.
The game boy versions offer one new boss battle with the introduction of Mega Man Killers named after music genres. The first of this line of robots is called RKN-001 or Enker. It's a pretty neat concept since they apparently have no natural weaknesses and you have have to whittle them down. I just think it was an excuse not to re-hash eight bots from the NES and call it a game without adding at least one new battle. Call it what you will, the battle with Enker is a challenge.
Graphics are great for 1991 Gameboy. Controls are spot on as is to be expected from one of the greats in gaming.
Overall it was a fun, but painfully difficult experience.
