A bridge in Bosnia has been re-named in honour of a British serviceman who was killed crossing it 18 years ago.

Lance Corporal Wayne Edwards of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers was the first British and Allied soldier to be killed in the Balkans conflict. He was shot in the head while escorting an ambulance containing injured civilians.

Now the bridge in Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje has been named Lance Corporal Wayne Edwards bridge in his memory. A special ceremony was attended by his sister Kimberley Gough, the former British commander Colonel Bob Stewart, alongside the the British Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the local mayor.

British troops were stationed there for part of the 1992 / 1995 war and helped protect the local population. Colonel Stewart recalled the day LCpl Edwards was killed.
