Almost three-quarters of Afghan women think their lives are better now than before foreign troops invaded the country research by ActionAid has found.

But the charity, together with Oxfam claims women's rights could be forgotten when international forces withdraw from the country.

The charities are using the tenth anniversary of the conflict to urge the British Government to make sure gains made towards equal rights are not sacrificed in any peace deal with the Taliban.

The ActionAid report found that while 72% of Afghan women feel things have improved since the start of the war, 37% fear their country will become a worse place if international troops leave.

The vast majority (86%) are worried about a return to a Taliban-style government, with one in five citing their daughter's education as their main concern.

Two-thirds (66%) of Afghan women said they felt safer now than they did 10 years ago.
