I'm not sparkly! I'm FABULOUS!

Optional Boss #1: Monsieur Scarlet (Chapter 4)

This is a B.O.S.S. rematch against a fight I've already beaten. I figured that since I had to go there anyway to pick up Spy Specs I might as well show how much easier a couple of chapters' worth of medals, skills, and rank ups can make a boss who can be very challenging for how early he's available.

Monsieur Scarlet is the game's first optional boss, who first becomes available at the start of Chapter 3. If you tried to take him on then you'd know how tough he is; he's got a wide arrary of hard-hitting attacks (including an AoE), and most of those attacks heal him. On top of that he'll permanently boost his stats as the fight goes on. You may not have been able to handle him then, and so put him off for later.

With everything that's now available towards the end of Chapter 4 he's less daunting. In particular I'd like to draw attention to Hard Charge, the Hard Mode reward for beating the Dune Scorpion. At first it looks like a tricky medal to use effectively since it costs HP. However, that's precisely its greatest strength; it gives you a huge damage boost while being easier on your TP and thus your items. Paired with Kabbu's Taunt it can be used relatively safely. In the event of an enemy who can use AoEs like Scarlet, First Plating can ensure that you can get at least one Charge off safely (on top of serving as a safety net if you need Kabbu to do anything other than Taunt).

The strategy I used for Astopheles can also work for Scarlet, if not quite as well since Scarlet's attacks heal him. Since you can use items here Bubble Shield Lite is a much better option (if still TP costly), so you have more room for error when it comes to superblocking. In fact that strategy can work quite well even at the earliest point you can fight him.

I also had a charm active while recording this video, which is an option as soon as you reach Defiant Root. I haven't mentioned charms before now because 1. I keep forgetting Charmy exists and 2. while helpful, charms are a little too luck-based to rely on. They're a nice bonus, but you don't need them even on Hardest mode.

Besides that, everything I mentioned in my previous video on Scarlet still applies here, so please watch that if you haven't already.

Waiting until the end of Chapter 4 to fight Scarlet will give you even more options to handle him, but I wouldn't wait any longer than that to fight him. Access to the Underground Tavern is just too much of a boon to pass up on, and its rewards will make dealing with the game's other bosses that much easier. Besides, if you're having trouble beating Scarlet even now, you're probably not ready to take on any of the other optional bosses.

0:00 Items and Medals
0:19 B.O.S.S. Selection
0:36 Fight

I forgot to show my stats, but the only really notable thing is that my Kabbu has -1 defense here because he has Favorite One equipped, and that I've used all the Heart/Bond Berries I could find before now.

Bug Fables is a 2019 turn-based RPG created by Moonsprout Games and published by DANGEN Entertainment. It is heavily inspired by the original two Paper Mario games (Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year door) and can be seen as a spiritual successor to them, although it has plenty of quirks of its own.

Check it out here!: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1082710/Bug_Fables_The_Everlasting_Sapling/

This playthrough was done on Hardest Mode. This isn't quite the same thing as using the Hard Mode medal, although that's part of it. HARDEST is one of the menu codes uncovered by doing certain things in the game, which serve as mutators when entered into the naming screen when creating a new file.

From the Bug Fables wiki (https://bugfables.fandom.com/wiki/Menu_Codes):
-The game is permanently in Hard Mode.
-Wearing the Hard Mode medal turns Team Snakemouth into Pibu.
-All enemies have 15% more HP and deal 1 more damage.
-After defeating Chapter 2's boss: all enemies deal 1 more damage.
-After starting Chapter 4: all enemies have 1 more defense.
-Members of a certain lategame optional boss team have 1 additional point of damage and defense.

Many thanks to the Bug Fables Discord for helping me make sure the information here is accurate.
