I was going to do this boss like I did every one up until now, but then I decided: no. This is one of the best sidequests in the game, culminating in one of the best bosses in the game. So I decided to show a little more than usual. Now onto the boss....

Optional Boss #5: Zommoth
HP: 127
Defense: 2

Attacks:
-Strike (6 damage to a single party member)
-Tail Strike (7 damage to a single party member)
-Blight Orbs (Hits two random party members for 6 damage, Poison, and Attack Down for two turns per hit)
-Screech (6 damage to all party members. Lowers Defense for 2 turns)
-Charge (Gain a +1 charge and raises Defense for 1 turn)
-Blight Beam (Deals two hits of damage to all party members, inflicting Poison and lowering Attack for two turns per hit. First hit does 6 damage; second hit does 5. Used only after Charge)
-Summon (Summons a random fungi-based enemy)

Zommoth is quite possibly the strongest boss you can face at this point in the game. Monstrous HP, 2 defense, and most of its attacks inflict Poison or lower your stats, and it has 2 AoEs, one of which lowers your defense and doesn't need to be telegraphed on top of hitting hard and being tricky to block. To top it all off it can summon the other enemies from Upper Snakemouth, most of whom are very strong themselves.

Fortunately, you have a potent new weapon: Ice Rain. While it's the most expensive skill in the game, it's also the most damaging with the same chance to freeze as Leif's other skills. Zommoth is also weak to it. This means that it's finally Leif's time to shine as the main damage dealer, appropriately enough (although Vi and Kabbu are still effective if you don't want to use Leif).

However, he starts the fight stunned and unable to move for the first couple turns. This means you're going to have to make due with Vi and Kabbu. Zommoth's first attack can be anything, but it'll always use Charge and then Blight Beam on turns 2 and 3, and Leif will automatically block the first beam for you. Use those two turns to try and do as much damage as possible with Vi and Kabbu; their defense-ignoring attacks can get around the defense.

Once Leif's able to move again, it's time to unleash as much damage as possible. Try to get your attack as high as you possibly can, be that through medals or attack-boosting items (ideally both). Poison Attacker is probably better than Power Exchange; Zommoth hits hard enough already without you lowering your defense into the negatives, and you'll have more MP to use on other medals.

Kill any enemy other than Zombiants as soon as they appear. Zombiants are weak and keep Zommoth from bringing in something more dangerous, so let those live.

You absolutely need HP Plus medals and AoE healing items here. Kabbu's Taunt alone isn't going to cut it with Zommoth's love of using Screech, and most of the enemies it summons also have an AoE. Especially pack lots of TP healing items; Queen's Dinners are fantastic if you're not using poison strats as they heal both HP and TP to the entire party. Even with the extra bulk, use Leif's Bubble Shield if you see Zommoth charge up; it's just not worth the risk of the party wipe unless Zommoth is on death's door.

Feel free to grind if you feel the need; Upper Snakemouth's enemies give loads of EXP. Saving this boss for later is also an option, but if you beat it now Chapter 5 will be a lot easier and Ice Rain is nice to have going forwards.

Bug Fables is a 2019 turn-based RPG created by Moonsprout Games and published by DANGEN Entertainment. It is heavily inspired by the original two Paper Mario games (Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year door) and can be seen as a spiritual successor to them, although it has plenty of quirks of its own.

This playthrough was done on Hardest Mode. This isn't quite the same thing as using the Hard Mode medal, although that's part of it. HARDEST is one of the menu codes uncovered by doing certain things in the game, which serve as mutators when entered into the naming screen when creating a new file.

From the Bug Fables wiki (https://bugfables.fandom.com/wiki/Menu_Codes):
-The game is permanently in Hard Mode.
-Wearing the Hard Mode medal turns Team Snakemouth into Pibu.
-All enemies have 15% more HP and deal 1 more damage.
-After defeating Chapter 2's boss: all enemies deal 1 more damage.
-After starting Chapter 4: all enemies have 1 more defense.
-Members of a certain lategame optional boss team have 1 additional point of damage and defense.

Many thanks to the Bug Fables Discord for helping me make sure the information here is accurate.
