"Caliber .50" originated as a scrolling shooter arcade game developed by SETA Corporation in 1989. Two years later, in 1991, a Sega Genesis port was released. This version features a single-player experience, with players controlling Captain Addis from the United States Army, and has additional stages and bosses, advertised as "2.5 times longer" than the arcade original.

Players embarks on a mission to rescue his fellow soldiers, twenty years after his unsuccessful attempt during the Vietnam War. Navigating through the Ho Chi Minh trail, Addis aims to liberate his captured comrades-in-arms. Tasked with escaping a prison compound, the pilot engages enemy soldiers using an arsenal of guns and grenades.

Various power-ups scattered throughout the game grant access to additional weapons, such as machine guns and flamethrowers. Notably, players can also commandeer enemy vehicles, including planes. An option menu allows players to select their preferred difficulty level (easy, normal, or hard) and adjust the number of initial lives. Each level concludes with the display of surviving soldiers via dog tags.

Overall, "Caliber .50" aims to deliver a straightforward, relentless action game and succeeds in doing that. On the downside is the absence of co-op mode, occasionally confusing level design and that it's still, despite its additional stages compared to the arcade version, a short game.
