Can You Get A VR Motion Capture System For Under $300? Let's Test The WalkOVR MOCAP And Find Out!
Today I am taking a look at the new WalkOVR wireless MOCAP system. I have to say I was impressed with Walkovr's first generation device and after only using this new one for a short time I can already see that the team has made some great improvments in this next generation offering!
So what exactly is this device supposed to do? Well I am happy to say that it now has 2 functions... First off, it is a system that allows users to walk in place and then this movement is translated into locomotion within many games. This effectively gives players the abiliy to have infinite walking space thus creating a more realistic "holodeck" type experience! Having the ability to just walk in place and not use artificial controller based locomation does something magical and really amps up the immersion and presence factor. When you all of a sudden realize that you are walking across strange new worlds or can actually run for your life in a favorite horror title something happens in your brain that just makes it all click and then it just seems to get more reall all of a sudden! Being able to walk and run also brings huge potential for this as a VR fitness device and as I teased in this video We will be testing this aspect of the WalkOVR shortly after the first of the year when my wife and I relaunch ourt old VR fitness series so look for that soon.
Now as for the MOCAP aspect of the device... this brings things to an entirely different level! We have already had a pretty good aproximation of upper body movement from just our motion controllers and some advanced kinematics for a while now, but adding the lower half of the body to spoof full body tracking in VR was AWESOME! Seeing my avatars reflection in the VRchat mirror was magical and again brought me to deeper levels of immersion than I had felt before. This has really gotten me curious as to just how much deeper down the rabbit hole things like this tech added together with proper face and eye tracking will take us!
I will say though that this is not a perfect system... There is still a lot of calibration to do each time you set it up and there can be a few hiccups here and there while playing but as I say in the video, if you are the type who likes to tinker with things and get them just right then you will have no problems but if you are someone who just wants to open the box, strap on some sensors and have evertything work perfectly out of the box then this will not be the case.
So I guess the big question is, Would I reccomend this tech? Well yes... I would deffinitely recommend that anyone interested in infinite walking or MOCAP in VR check out the WalkOVR products... they are good quality and actually work as advertised! In the end, this system did enhance my VR experiences and anything that can take me deeper down the Virtual Reality rabbit hole and not break the bank while doing it definitely gets my seal of aproval!
