Canary - Game preview / gameplay
No, it's not about a cute little yellow bird who thought that he saw a certain feline. Rather, Canary is a side-scrolling shooter/miner. Miner? Yes, miner, as strange as that may sound.
At first glance, you'd think that the game is nothing more than a Gradius-like, with your character travelling through the level and shooting anything that comes at it. Granted, it may look like that at first, but it's much more than that and it offers rather unique gameplay quite unlike other games in the genre.
It should be said that the game doesn't rely solely on good gameplay (which is a plus nonetheless). In fact, it's got great-looking visuals. Your little alien miner animates nicely and is drawn in a neat little cutesy fashion. And he's not just a static character floating about in null-g either, his movements all animate appropriately, his mining laser radiates the right amount of light, and the environment is chock-full of tiny little details that make the game that much more aesthetically pleasing. Further, the levels look great, with various little things coming together for an overall great experience. The level isn't static, there are oodles of things moving about, blinking on and off, or just animating idly.
What's more, the game sounds great too. Your mining laser has a satisfying blast sound to it (despite the fact that light doesn't make any noise), exploding aliens have a very visceral sound to them, and demolished terrain all chunks together with nice little crunches. The music too is amazing, giving you a nice throwback to old arcade style games while retaining enough of a modern feel to not seem like a cheap gimmick.
For the most part, you control your little guy with the mouse. You can fire a laser that you use to affect the environment, but beyond that, there aren't really any special controls. To maneuver your guy, you just move your mouse around and your miner will float in the appropriate direction.
Despite looking good and sounding great, where this game really shines is in the gameplay. Rather than being a straightforward shooter, Canary adds a nice little twist on things. You don't have a gun per se, rather, you've got a mining laser that you can use to tunnel through terrain. This can be used to create passages where there were none, to slice slabs of earth off to come plummeting down onto baddies, or even as a generic blaster to take out aliens where more creative approaches won't work. More than a simple shooter, this game plays as a puzzler as well, with the different levels requiring you to think your way through as much as react quickly to threats.
In closing, it must be said that Canary is a unique little game that brings everything to the table. Great graphics, great sound, and great gameplay.
