Hive Hero - Game preview / gameplay
4Man the defenses, bring out the cannons, and defend the hive! Hive Hero allows you to do just that as you take on the role of a solitary bee who is inexplicably armed with a wide variety of guns in his bid to defend his hive.
The game looks to be a generic shooter, and while it is indeed rather similar to most other shooters in this genre, it brings its own flavor and style to the table making for a fun and addictive little game.
The graphics here are all drawn in cartoony vector graphics. That's not to say that they're bad though, quite the contrary. The graphics are charming and colorful, making for a great-looking and great-playing game. As the game is all about bees (as you can expect from a game called "Hive Hero") you shouldn't really expect anything really groundbreaking in terms of the art style. Still, it's worth mentioning that each of the bees on screen isn't just a simple little drawing floating about. Each bee animates in tiny little ways that brings the game to life. You'll see the fluttering of their wings, twitching eyeballs, jumpy little bodies, and neat little explosions (though why bees explode is more of a mystery).
Like the graphics, the sound is cute and charming. Despite the fact that you're shooting a gun at all the other bees, it never really gets too chaotic or annoying. Your gun shoots with more of a little popping noise than a banging one. And even when the bees who carry comically shaped bombs explode, they sound more cute than anything else.
As can be expected, the controls are fairly simple here. You move around with the keyboard and shoot and aim with the mouse. It can get a bit messy at times once more than five bees get on screen (they're large bees) but for the most part, controlling your bee is simple and very intuitive.
As aforementioned, you're tasked with shooting down all the other bees. You start out with a simple gun and progress through the levels improving your firepower and taking on more and more bees. The majority of bees that you encounter will simply fly across the screen, though there are some who'll specifically target you. It's not a very difficult game, though later levels can be a bit challenging. Still, for the most part, it plays as a rather relaxing little game, one that you'd use to relax.
All in all, Hive Hero is a solid and rather adorable little game. It's nothing hardcore, it's nothing fancy, but it does well at what it sets out to do.
