Ever have one of those days where you thought to yourself, man, Space Invaders would be totally awesome if you could jump around, had a limited range of movement, and things attacking from the sides? No? Well, just me then. Either way, Dot-Matrix Shooter gives you all that and a bit extra.
At first glance, Dot-Matrix Shooter looks to be a straight-up Space Invaders clone. While it does follow the formula of, "shoot the pixelated blobs at the top of the screen as they come towards your pixelated avatar", it does add some stuff of its own to make it a more interesting game.
As can be expected, the graphics are rather simplistic. You've got a little pixelated shooter blasting apart little pixelated bombs and missiles. While the graphics are simplistic, it doesn't take away from the overall fun of the game. Instead, it rather adds to the overall charm and feel of the game, making for an even better experience.
The controls are simple enough, you shuffle along the terrain with the left and right keys and you jump with the up key. To shoot at things, you hit X. For the most part though, it's easier to dodge things than to shoot them, but sooner or later you're going to have to target things and shoot them down for the powerups and bonuses, but more on that later. The controls can feel a bit floaty at times, but not so much so as to make control of the game a chore. Sure, it could be a bit snappier, but it works well enough.
As aforementioned, you're going to need to shoot things sooner or later. This is because of an interesting game mechanic: as you move left or right, jump, or shoot, your ability to do that specific action decreases. Hitting left multiple times will thus deplete your ability to move left. Why? No idea. Does it make sense? No, not really. Does it make for a unique aspect of gameplay? You betcha. In order to replenish your ability to do those things, you can grab the correspondingly labeled powerups as they fall from the sky. Alternatively, you could shoot down some of the bombs and missiles and that'll replenish a tiny fraction of your abilities. You have to be careful though, as too much movement will easily cripple you when things get more hectic, so strategy is the name of the game rather than fast twitchy key mashing.
All in all, Dot Matrix Shooter is a fun and interesting little game. Sure, it may not be quite long-lived and you'll tire of it soon enough, but it's great fun while it lasts.
