Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium (Three Wonders, Block Block) playthrough
Today was a long one. I was not expecting Block Block to be such a slog. Both games took about an hour and a half each today, though one was three games that were 30 minutes each. And one of those three was surprisingly fun.
Three Wonders: A "3-in-1" arcade game. You have a side-scroller, a shmup, and a puzzle game. And of the three, the puzzle game ended up being the most fun. It was the one I was least looking forward to as well. It shared similarities to an old DOS game I had called Pengo (I kept calling it 'Pengu' by mistake). I didn't like that version, but this one was a lot of fun. It felt intense trying to play it, action oriented. That just goes to show that a sold gameplay loop can work for really any 'genre'. A fun game is a fun game.
Block Block: A Breakout style game that, sadly, is no Arkanoid. This one has some features that I truly disliked. First, you have a limited number of hits before your paddle shrinks. Second, the ball control in this game just felt really bad. I couldn't tell what angle the ball was going to bounce off, even when I used the magnet to hold the ball. Sometimes it would shoot the opposite direction that it indicated. Not good at all. Lastly, I didn't like that there were some blocks below the paddle, where the ball usually costs you a life when it passes. But it did include one-sided blocks that I thought was neat, as well as having exits that would come up to get you instantly out of some levels. The latter seemed like a solution to a problem they created. Honestly, the lack of ball control just killed this game for me. They want you to "spin" the ball by quickly rotating the controller, or in this case pressing the "max speed" button. But that just takes away ANY sense of control you had. Not a fun game. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
