Gradius II started out using a base of just "one of the most influential SHMUPS of its era." How do you improve upon something like that? Well, you can make the bosses bigger, you can make the graphics better, you can diversify the game's mechanics by offering options in loadout choices, you can tune up the soundtrack... and, frankly, this game just goes down that list, checking off everything.
