Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Batman: The Animated Series for the Game Boy developed by Rare and published by LJN.

It's hard to believe that Rare, the makers of some of the best platformers of the 1990s, started the decade with this. And it's even weirder to see a name as revered as Rare being paired with one as notorious as LJN, but nonetheless, that's The Amazing Spider-Man. Released in 1990, this Game Boy beat 'em up doesn't do anything particularly memorable. Not in a good way, at least. Spider-Man is hanging out at home one day, when all of the sudden, he starts getting phone calls from villains. Seriously. They ask Spidey if he can come out to play—we're only half kidding—and the fight begins. The game features six Spider-Man villains to defeat, including the Hobgoblin, Rhino and Venom, as well as eight levels to fight through. The game is mostly a 2D beat 'em up, although there are two levels in which Spidey must climb up a building. Rest for the weary! The Amazing Spider-Man is a single-player game.

This video review features video gameplay footage of The Amazing Spider-Man for the Game Boy and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.
