Well this is a surprise! The long-teased Team of 3 mode for Strive was shown off a bit more at EVO this past week, and an open beta is going on this weekend so I decided to take a quick look at it. The results...welp...it sure is something!

Turning Strive into a tag fighter is an interesting choice...making the assists fully invincible, able to be called when you're being attacked is a bit demented though. Adding to that is the ability to use Skills to clutter the battlefield with projectiles and effects. The fact that all three characters share the same health bar is also a bit strange. Something I wasn't even realizing at the time is that when you tag someone else in, you'll have two characters temporarily fighting together for a bit....and you're both able to be attacked, which will do even MORE damage to your shared health. Happy Birthdays are in Strive, baby!

Yeah uh....I'm not sure I like this mode that much. I'm fine with this being a goofy party mode but it's so chaotic I can't get a handle on things. If they could make it a bit more clear who the point character is in all of this, especially when you can have a team of all the same character, that would be nice. There's also the matter of connections being a bit bad. This IS a beta and it's expected to have some issues but ultimately I spent a lot of time unable to get into games, or else they were a bit laggy. Felt like the game looked worse too, so maybe this is a compromise to make the mode even work. I will say that despite being on a base PS4 this ran better overall than I expected!

Dizzy is out in October as Season 4 officially starts, and I assume this mode will come with it. I'll try to get some more Strive out there beforehand though, shake some of that rust off. For now though, hope you enjoyed this slight return to the world of Guilty Gear.
