THE QUEEN HAS ARRIVED. Fans have waited for quite a while but we finally have Dizzy in Strive. The child of Sol and Justice, Dizzy is an immensely powerful Gear who is nevertheless extremely kind and caring. She fell in love with Ky and they've since been wed and have a family, though we've had their son Sin in the game for some time now. It seems her story is moving forward with her as queen of a new nation, Vialattea, along with Ky. I have a sneaking suspicion this will be elaborated on more in the Strive anime hitting next year but we'll have to see!
Dizzy has traditionally been a very mobile zoner, possessing two air dashes and a ton of projectiles produced by her guardian familiars, Undine and Necro. From ice fish to fireballs, powerful pillars of ice and flame, and even gigantic lasers, Dizzy could pollute the screen with a ton of stuff, making it hard to get close to her. She's had a few changes for Strive though.
As I go into detail at the start, Dizzy lost her second airdash and a few projectiles in favor of going all-in on a unique ice mechanic. She can freeze opponents with her ice spike or standing Heavy Slash, or freeze the ground with Ice Field, which creates slippery ice physics both characters have to deal with for some time. She still has her ice fish and fireball projectiles, with her jump Dust being a potent projectile too, but her fancy new Michael Sword really gets my dopamine going if it connects.
Dizzy is a bit of a glass cannon though, having low health (though a high Guts value) and many of her moves leave her vulnerable if whiffed. She has Imperial Ray as an invincible reversal but that costs meter. In fact, she's very meter hungry with a few moves. Gamma Ray is a super powerful Overdrive, but costs 100 Tension, and her new Wings of Light move drains her meter on full activation...assuming you can avoid getting hit for ten seconds or so. In exchange you can shred the opponent's health with unblockable damage so there's that!
I had some struggles with Dizzy this time. I haven't played Strive in a bit, on top of learning a new character...but also it felt like people in floor 7 had leveled up since last time and I was ranked down a bit. Tried some park matches but uh...we're better off not showing them I think. Also a fair few mirrors I chose to cut since they weren't as interesting. Worth noting I DID get back to floor 7 off-screen with some good matches...kinda wish I kept recording.
Next week Strive will be having another Team of 3 beta test, so I'll likely record that but we'll see. Season 4 is off to a crazy start, and some people aren't happy with it, but we'll see how it shakes out. Dizzy is neat, but I think I might be sticking to my mains so next time I play I'll likely be trying out the changes for Baiken and Sin. Stay tuned!
