Chou Makaimura (SFC) - (Professional | 1cc | Longplay)
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, man oh man this is prolly the best GnG game during the 16bit era.
It's unclear when this takes place and the manual doesn't help much. Prin Prin's name is now Guinevere and it mentions something about vampires...which is a complete lie. The wiki says it's a predecessor which doesn't really make sense because Sardius and Nebiroth aren't in the 1st game.
It can't be a sequel either since ghouls n ghosts says it was 3 years after the first game. So I'm just gonna go with this game taking place after the arcade/genesis ghouls 'n ghosts.
The only gripe I have for this is they removed the ability to shoot up and down BUT it does swap it for a double jump which is immensely helpful so you don't have to make committed jumps too often. The game is more centered on platforming now instead of going at it aggressively like a run 'n gun. It's also the first in the series to be released only consoles.
Anyways, the plot is almost like the 1st game where Prin Prin get's kidnapped but with more background story. After vanquishing the Ghoul Realm and saving Prin Prin, Arthur sets out to learn some white magic until an eerie spells shrouds the Kingdom and Sardius has Satan (who nevere appeared again in the rest of the game) steals Prin Prin once again so our valian Knight and his boxers sets out to vanquish the Demon/Ghoul realm once again.
Now the game is pretty much the same but now you have a double jump which can save you a lot from certain spots. It has a new set of armor too, the bronze armor which upgrades all your weapons. Once you have the gold armor you can casts spells again like in the previous title except now you have a shield that can take 1 hit. If you have the sun shield it takes 3 hits.
Staple weapons are here but the new ones include the scythe, crossbow and tri blade. Scythe is just the discus, crossbow is immensely helpful ESPECIALLY on Red Arremer's. Tri Blade is eh, Axe would've been good until you pick up the bronze armor.
There's about 8 stages, 8th stage being the final room where Samael is. Once you beat the mario bros Astatorh and Nebiroth, Prin Prin says you're not powerful enough so you need the worst possible weapon, the Goddess bracelet. By all means, stick to the knife or crossbow because the goddess bracelet sucks a lot even if it eats projectiles.
Visuals are much improved, the music is very atmospheric especially stage 5/the ice forest. Difficulty though...it's surprisingly balanced so long as you keep you're gold armor on and have the knife. Don't have the knife? The crossbow alone can carry you and deal with the red arremer's easily.
Losing your armor does make it a little harder but not to a point it's unfair. There's only one difficulty anyways, a friend of mine said that raising the difficulty just lowers your continues so you can go through this on normal if you like. Really though, RNG is the only thing I can complain about here because you're already OP once the gold armor is with you and you can beat bosses in seconds with it...save for the mario bros when you need the goddess bracelet at the hallway of ghouls. BY ALL MEANS PRACTICE THE ASTAROTH BROS. Because if you so much as choke on Nebiroth it's gonna be an issue to get the goddess bracelet again.
Overall though it's a great title during the launch of the SNES, it showcased the mode 7 and rotating sprites. The music is impressive along with the fantasy medieval setting. Compared to the previous two titles, this was much easier to go through really since it's more on the slower pace side of things since it focuses more on precision platforming.
If you're as stubborn and dauntless as the knight Arthur himself who likes a good challenge, then I highly recommend it. So long as you go the gold armor for the rest of the stages then you're set.
If you like my runs be sure to check out the group I'm in if you want to see us play more good ol fashion retro games!
