Chrono Trigger - Ch. 2 - The Queen Returns
CHAPTER 2 - THE QUEEN RETURNS
You'll find yourself on the world map as soon as you head south. Wait a minute... this looks like Crono's hometown! But something's different (and Lenne Square isn't there at all, nor is Crono's house or the port). Begin poking your head into various buildings and speak to the occupants to learn that you've traveled back in time. You're in the time of King Guardia XXI, only 600 years into the kingdom of Guardia's lifespan. A state of perpetual war exists between Guardia and the forces of the Fiendlord, and everyone is wound up a little tight as a result.
The Truce Inn, located at the same place here as it is in the future, is where a lot of information can be garnered. A man named Toma within will tell you a story for naught about the Queen's disappearance if you buy him a round at the bar, but keep in mind the cathedral he mentions for later. The latest hullabaloo is all about the Queen's untimely disappearance, and the mystery behind her sudden reappearance at the castle. That castle, located to the west of the village, is our next destination for exploration.
But to get to that castle, we first have to go through Guardia Forest, an enemy-full area that surrounds it (the aforementioned cathedral further west is indeed full of suspicious-acting nuns, but not much more can be done for now). The initial section of Guardia Forest is shaped somewhat like a large circle. Explore the east side first, and you'll encounter some enemies in the form of Green Imps and Roundillos. You'll also run into some Blue Eaglets and Roundillo Riders as well. The only item you'll find of interest is the first glowing spot you come across as you head east containing a Strength Capsule (the second nearby glowing spot is an enemy trap). Otherwise, all you have to do is circle around towards the west side of the map, and then follow the pathway east and north to get back to the world map.
Once in Guardia Castle, you'll immediately be intercepted by two guards. These two guards are dismissed by the recently-rescued Queen (who looks awfully familiar...) and you're then free to explore the castle at will. Consider visiting the rooms to the left and right before going forward. To the left, you can find a place to sleep and talk to some soldiers, while more soldiers and an Ether in a treasure chest can be found to the right, in the dining room and kitchen (you'll also encounter an interesting verbal argument as you leave). Then, you can head north from the castle's entrance to continue exploring.
This is the castle's throne room. Speak to the king's chancellor and watch him run off suspiciously. The king will thank you for helping find his wife (what?), and you're then free to explore. Explore to the west first, walking up to the king's chamber (and finding 100 Gold in a treasure chest on one of the floors en route). You'll find the chancellor again acting suspiciously, this time peering in on the king's chamber without anyone knowing (the king's servants speak ill of him as well, except for one claiming he's religious because he visits that suspect cathedral to the west of the castle). Be sure to grab the Bronze Armor from the chest in the king's bedroom before heading back to the throne room, and don't forget to equip it for a substantial boost to your defense.
To the right of the throne room is the Queen's chamber (again, grab another treasure, this time a Potion, as you run up to the Queen's room). When you finally get there, speak to the Queen (grab the Ether from the nearby treasure chest, as well). It appears that this Queen is Marle! Your suspicions were right all along (granted you had them, which you should have, since it was rather obvious). However, as Crono and Marle speak, Marle is suddenly teleported away again! As Crono leaves the room (speak to the women and soldier waiting outside, answering them how you'd like), you'll be intercepted by Lucca near the throne room, who finally came from the future to investigate.
It appears, according to Lucca, that we're time traveling with her new device. But with Marle mistaken for the Queen, the search for the real Queen has been called off. This could mean trouble for the future, since Marle's actually a princess of Guardia from Crono and Lucca's time, but wouldn't be born if the real Queen isn't found to have her descendant. Follow all of that? Good. With that information, it's time to head south back through Guardia Forest the way you came, and then westward to the Cathedral, where we'll begin to get to the bottom of things.
