CHAPTER 5 - THE TRIAL

When you're in the jail cell, getting out is all about bothering the guards. Examine the jail cell door repeatedly, and a vengeful guard will eventually enter the cell. When you regain control, quickly run around him, and engage the two Royal Guards in combat. Once they're felled, head rightward into the adjoining area; the jail cell to your left can't be opened right now. Kill the two enemies here (Sentries are killed easily by waiting for them to expose their scrawny bodies before attacking), and then climb the ladder leading up and to the left. You won't find any items up here, but you can fight a fairly powerful Lancer, for experience and gold.

Back at the multi-staircase room, take the bottom right staircase and run across the bridge. You'll encounter a guard here who can be knocked out instantaneously. Gain access to the cell he was guarding and pillage the four treasure chests there -- you'll find two Mid-Potions and two Ethers to add to your inventory. After grabbing those, return to the staircase room and take the only unexplored staircase; the one up and to the right. Cross the bridge you encounter, kill the Royal Guards that greet you, and run into the tower on the other side of the bridge.

You'll begin to encounter more Royal Guards that can be snuck up on and knocked out without a traditional fight, something that works to your advantage since a Mid-Potion can be earned each time you manage to surprise a guard. Work your way rightward down this corridor, either fighting or surprising the guards you encounter. When you reach a cell on the far right, open it. Examine the guillotine to free a man named Fritz from it -- he's related to the owner of the market in Truce, and you'll be glad you helped him later on. Be sure to grab the Mid-Potion from the treasure chest nearby, and then open the gate leading northward. You'll find some Bronze Armor in this room, but you'll have to work your way through a pair of Lancers to return to the previous room.

Explore the only yet-unexplored segment of this area, which will lead to the north and then to the west. Another four-way staircase can be found here after going over another bridge. Get the Sentries out of the way so you don't have to deal with them later, and then take the bottom left staircase. Breach the rightmost cell and grab the Shelter from the chest, and then return to the staircase. Take the upper lefthand staircase, and go into the leftmost cell. Go through the hole in the wall and scale the wall downward until you reach another hole in the tower. Go into the hole, grab the Shelter from the treasure chest, and then jump into the hole to get into the cell below. This cell is the one that was locked adjacent to where you were being held. Open the two chests to find 1,500 Gold and a Silver Sword. Equip the latter as you climb back up to your previous position, working your way back to the staircase, and this time taking the upper righthand one.

Continue up the staircase until you reach a room with a large wooden door. Fight the two Royal Guards posted there, and bust through the door. The warden will be alerted to your presence and run off, only to return and get knocked unconscious. Lucca will return and join the party here (this would have happened earlier had you more patiently waited in your jail cell). Be sure to read the document about the mechanized dragon that's knocked to the ground, since it gives you integral hints to defeating the upcoming boss. Also, search the warden's body for five Mid-Potions. With all of that, save at the save point behind the desk, and then walk up the stairs.

As you begin crossing the bridge leftward, you'll encounter the mechanized dragon, which has three parts -- a head, a body, and wheels. As the document informed you, the head heals the entire body; thus, it must be dealt with first. Don't deal any damage to any part of the dragon but the head until it's eliminated. Thereafter, the dragon won't be able to heal itself. The body and wheels can be dealt with in any order, but we recommend taking the wheels out first, and then the body, since the wheels allow the dragon to execute its most devastating attack.

When the dragon is eliminated and the Chancellor is thoroughly embarrassed, use he and his cronies' bodies as a bridge, and begin running down the tower to the ground level (be sure to grab the Shelter from the topmost floor!) Ultimately, you'll have to run from endless streams of sentries, but when Marle appears on the scene, she helps Crono and Lucca escape outside. Running through Guardia Forest, another time portal is found. Take it and travel to the future, where current-day Guardia is unrecognizable.
