Chrono Trigger - Ending #2 - The Reunion (All Versions)
Alrighty, now that we've gotten the most common ending out of the way (Ending #1 - Beyond Time), it's time to start looking at some of the other endings for Chrono Trigger. This next one is a little sad, but there's a bit of hope in there too...
ENDING #2 - THE REUNION
How to get this Ending - Defeat Lavos after Crono's death, but before re-acquiring him.
Just like in 'Beyond Time', there are four different versions of this ending, depending on whether you used Epoch to reach Lavos and whether or not Magus was allowed to join your group.
00:18 - With Epoch and Magus
11:21 - With Epoch, but without Magus
22:20 - Without Epoch, but with Magus
31:30 - Without Epoch or Magus
There is a slim window for this ending, as Crono dies at the end of Ch. 22 - 'Lavos Beckons' and is brought back in Ch. 24 - 'The Time Egg'. But it is not a hard ending to achieve. For me, the easiest way to beat Lavos is with Lucca, Magus and Robo. Equip one of them with the Blue Rock/Blue Gemstone to unlock 'Omega Flare', arguably the strongest Triple Tech in the game and just spam away. Magus can join your party in this window, so it makes it fairly easy.
Upon defeating Lavos, our heroes will wake up in the End of Time. Gaspar warns them that since Lavos is now dead, the Gates should begin to disappear. Marle and Lucca tries to rally everyone by reminding them that Crono is still dead and that they should work on a way to bring him back. However, the rest of the group simply wants to return back to their original time eras, afraid that the Gates will disappear and they'll lose their chance to go home.
After everyone leaves, Gaspar will mention that he forgot to give them the Time Egg. In the next scene, you'll be at the Moonlight Parade. The dialogue from Lara, Taban, Crono's Mom and Melchior is exactly the same as in the first ending. In the first version, Lucca and Marle will head to the Telepod area to reminisce, when suddenly a Gate opens and everyone (including Gaspar) comes bursting out of it. After the dust settles, Gaspar will go charging back into the Gate.
The rest of the party will chase after him, saying that he knows a way to bring Crono back. The Gate closes, but Lucca reminds Marle that they can still follow them with the Epoch. Lucca and Marle sneak off to the Epoch while the King is busy setting up Nadia's Bell. After the first credits scene, the second set of credits will play next to a shot of Marle standing by the tree from Death's Peak. At the end of the credits scene, Marle will turn around to see Crono's silhouette appearing, followed by an end card showing them both together.
If you still have the Epoch but Magus is not in your party, you'll be treated to a slightly different version. The main difference here is when Frog appears in the Telepod area, he is now a human. Both Lucca and Marle will comment on how handsome he is lol.
If you used the Epoch to reach Lavos and Magus has joined your party, you'll see yet another version. Since the Gates have all disappeared and the Epoch is gone, Lucca tinkers with the Telepod to make it a time machine. Lucca tells Marle to stay behind with her Dad, but promises to bring Crono back. Afterwards, Marle will float away on the balloons that were tied to Nadia's Bell.
If you used Epoch to reach Lavos, but Magus did not join your party, you'll see a fourth version of this ending. It is exactly like the previous one, only Magus isn't there. Frog is not a human in this one, nor does it show the credits scene where he transforms behind a waterfall.
What do you think about this ending? Is it better than 'Beyond Time'?
