Chrono Trigger - Ch. 28 - The Fated Hour (Part 4 - The Black Omen)
CHAPTER 28 - THE FATED HOUR (PART 4 - THE BLACK OMEN)
The Black Omen may seem daunting, but if your party is at around Level 45, you should be fine. More importantly, the Black Omen is a treasure-trove of valuable items that you won't be able to find (in these numbers, at least) virtually anywhere else. To top things off, the Black Omen can be completed exactly three times, as long as you start in the Present era and work your way backwards. While this area is fairly large, navigating it is pretty straight-forward. There's very little chance of actually getting lost here.
If you head to the Black Omen in 2300 AD, Queen Zeal will tell you that you're too late. Since the Day of Lavos has already passed, Lavos has already emerged and currently reigns supreme. After a quick battle, you'll find the door that leads inside is locked. Head to 1000 AD. As you enter, Queen Zeal will talk a bit before summoning the Mega Mutant. The dialogue here is slightly different depending the on time period.
Mega Mutant - 4600HP (top), 3850 (bottom)
You'll fight three mutants throughout the Black Omen, this one is the easiest. Just unleash your strongest attacks and it should fall in about 2-3 turns. There's two monsters here that have good stuff you can 'Charm' from them with Ayla. One is 'Flyclops' the one-eyed flying-cat thing. You can steal the much coveted 'Golden Stud', which cuts MP consumption by 75%. You really only need three, but stock up as much you'd like. There's also a monster called 'Panel', which is literally just a wall panel that fights you. You can charm 'Speed Tabs' from them. After a few screen, you'll fight the next mutant, Giga Mutant
Giga Mutant - 5800HP (top), 4950HP (bottom)
This one is immune to physical attacks, so just unleash your strongest magic techs (Luminaire, Flare, Electrocute, etc.) and it should go down pretty easy. Further down the line, you'll face Terra Mutant, the final mutant.
Terra Mutant - 7800HP (top), 20000HP (bottom)
The top absorbs life from the bottom, while the bottom absorbs magic damage. Just concentrate on the top and both will fall eventually. Keep on going, using save points here and there to heal with shelters. Next up, you'll face a Lavos Spawn, similar to the one we faced on Death Peak.
Lavos Spawn - 13,500HP (shell), 10,000HP (head)
Just like the last time, ignore the shell and just concentrate on the head. If you have the best gear available, none of these bosses should've given you much trouble. But this was just really the warm-up for the main fight. Beyond the Lavos Spawn, you'll face one last set of Panels. A save point will pop up after the fight, make sure to heal here. Beyond this room are the final bosses of the area.
In the next room, you'll find Queen Zeal. After some brief dialogue, the fight will begin.
Queen Zeal - 12000 HP
At the beginning of the fight, she will use a special attack which lowers the party's HP to 1. Don't panic though, you'll have plenty of time to heal. More importantly, you can Charm two Megalixirs from her! When you defeat her, she will drop another Megalixir. After defeat she will then try to toss you into the Mammon Machine, thereby initiating her second form.
Mammon Machine - 18000HP
This fight is fairly easy. If you had bad luck and started this fight low on HP, don't worry. You'll have plenty of time to heal. You can Charm another Megalixir out of this boss. Heal as needed, then punch away until it's down. Now Queen Zeal will get serious. If you have Magus with you, she'll add a bit of dialogue and you'll fight her while the Magus Theme plays. In this form, she's a floating head with two floating hands.
Zeal - 20,000 (Face), 28,000 (for each hand)
Ignore the hands and focus on attacking the face. You can Charm another Megalixir from the head, a Prismatic Dress from the left hand and a Prismatic Helm from the right. This is the toughest fight, in my opinion. When she's defeated, she'll summon Lavos to fight you. The Black Omen will be destroyed and Lavos will emerge.
This first half of the fight is extremely easy. Lavos will go through nine modes based on previous bosses you've faced. Simply use the same strategy from when you fought these bosses throughout the game. It will take on the HP of those bosses, so the first couple ones you might even kill in one shot. The last one is 'Giga Gaia'. When you beat that one, you'll face Lavos directly now.
Lavos (phase 2) - 10,000HP
Lavos is clearly stronger here, but you can still beat him quickly. With my party of Crono, Ayla and Frog; the triple tech '3D Attack' does about 3,500 damage. I easily beat it in three turns without taking much damage. When Lavos is defeated, you'll enter it's shell where you'll find a save point and a time gate. Congratulations, you're now officially in the final chapter of the game.
