Chrono Trigger is a legend in gaming. It's widely recognized as one of the best games released on the SNES, and it's often ranked among the best to ever be produced by Square.
As the name implies, Chrono Trigger is a story about time. Beginning in the year 1000, you play as Crono, a teenage boy who is excited to attend the kingdom's millennial celebration. After running into and befriending a cute girl, the two decide to go check out Chrono's friend Lucca's demonstration of her brand new invention, a device that can teleport matter across a short distance. Chrono tries the machine out, and it works flawlessly. The crowd goes nuts.
However, when Chrono's new friend Marle tries it for herself, something goes horribly wrong. The teleportation field unexpectedly reacts to Marle's pendant and tears a hole through the fabric of time and space. Marle is sucked into the tear and disappears, and Chrono, being the good guy that he is, follows after her.
The heavy sci-fi slant was novel stuff from an era of RPGs dominated by high fantasy tropes, and the game's creative staff includes some true behemoths of the gaming world circa 1995. When you have names like Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, and Hironobu Sakaguchi being supported by such an extraordinarily talented staff, great things are bound to result. And they did.
The story is fantastic, and the game play mechanics are easy to understand, are well balanced, and they bounce well off of one another. The multiple endings and branding story paths give it a lot of replay value, and the graphics and sound are top shelf stuff. It's hard to find legitimate fault with any aspect of the game's craftsmanship.
The reviewers back in the day unanimously agreed, too. It earned top marks from all of the American review outlets, and it was generally regarded as being just as good a game as Final Fantasy III.
Besides that, it's difficult to find anything to say about Chrono Trigger that hasn't already been said a thousand times before. Suffice to say, if you enjoy a good RPG, you'll adore this game.
