Acquiring the Epoch has allowed Crono and his friends to return back to the time of Zeal, but access to the lift gates were unavailable. So visiting the earthbound villagers for some kind of guidance was their only option. Luckily for them, they villagers informed them that the Guru Melchior was imprisoned atop of the very mountain lingering afloat behind their village.
But before Crono and his friends could even climb the chain that keeps Mt. Woe tethered to the earth, they must first clear the path of monsters protecting it.
