CiB Game Boy Theater - NBA Live 96 and Battletoads in Ragnarok's World (Episode 106)
The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
NBA Live 96 was released in March, 1996 for the Game Boy -- there were also versions on the SNES, Genesis, Playstation, and more. It was developed by Tiertex Design Studios, who developed a LOT of handheld sports games, and published by Electronic Arts.
WOW. This is truly one of the worst games I have ever played. It is technically impressive that they were able to get a 5-on-5 basketball game to work on the Game Boy, but I would put a lot of quotations around the game 'working'. This is legitimately less than 5 frames per second, and you can safely never play this game ever, for any reasons.
Battletoads in Ragnarok's World is a 1993 Game Boy port of the 1991 Battletoads game for the NES. It was developed by Rare, and published by TradeWest.
The most interesting thing about this game is that there was a game called 'Battletoads' for the Game Boy in 1991, which was actually a spin-off of the standard 'Battletoads' NES game. Then in 1993, they wanted to port the NES 'Battletoads' and couldn't call it 'Battletoads' again, so they added 'In Ragnarok's World'. I find that absolutely hilarious, and ridiculously confusing. Other than that, this is literally Battletoads on the NES. It's a really good port, and definitely worth your time if you're looking for another solid (albeit pretty hard) Game Boy game. Thanks for watching!
