CiB Game Boy Theater - Paperboy 2 and Contra: The Alien Wars (Episode 105)
The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
Paperboy 2 was released in 1991 for pretty much every video game system imaginable. It was developed by Tengen (well-known for their odd shaped NES cartridges), and published by Mindscape (known for Deja Vu, SimEarth, and Prince of Persia). I have long held the opinion that Paperboy is one of the worst 'classic' games out there. You can definitely say I'm bad at it, because I absolutely am. I don't think anything will ever make me actually like Paperboy, and Paperboy 2 for the Game Boy is pretty darn awful. NEXT!
Contra: the Alien Wars is a port/remake of Contra III from the SNES -- Contra III was released in 1992, and this version was released in 1994. Okay, an actually good Game Boy game! This is just like Contra III for the SNES -- it runs well, it controls well, it looks good, it sounds good. Konami really was on the top of its game back in the 90s. Apologies that the game crashed -- this is pretty common with Super Game Boy for us. Oh well, we played enough to know we had a pretty great game on our hands -- thanks for watching!
