Citizen X | FMV, But Not - Blast Processing
The FMV era was a short, but memorable moment in video game history. The games were often lacking in gameplay, but showed off the multimedia capabilities of the CD format. In an attempt to try and combine the best of both worlds, Digital Pictures took a stab at combining the cinematic platformer with additional FMV flair. It never made it to shelves at the time, but was released years later as a playable beta by Good Deal Games. It's an interesting experience, but it it a good one?

Digital Pictures was a prolific developer during the FMV era, pumping out several titles across the majority of CD based consoles during their relatively short lifespan. Those release were, by and large, fairly similar in terms of gameplay. By that, I mean that there was very little to be had.
Citizen X is evidence that the developer did have loftier goals when it came to gameplay, though those goals would be ultimately unfulfilled. The game was quietly cancelled at the time, seemingly in favour of an ever expanding lineup of more traditional FMV titles.
It's a shame because there is a core here that would have been exciting at the time. Marrying high-end 16-bit gameplay with the more advanced presentation made possible by CD-ROM technology was an idea that should have been explored more. Luckily, almost a decade after the initial planned release date, the beta was picked up for distribution and released to the public by Good Deal Games. This gives us a glimpse into the ambitious, yet ultimately fairly rubbish, game that was Citizen X.
