Slipstream was a true arcade oddity. A Capcom racing game on Sega arcade hardware... what could go wrong?

Racing games have been some of the most popular cabinets in arcades basically as long as they have existed. Throughout the 90s in particular, they often featured massive custom cabinets lined up next to one another, using big screens and powerful hardware to capture the attention of anyone passing by.

A collaboration between Capcom and Sega during this era would have been a big deal regardless, but you'd think that their attempt at an arcade racing would have led to something truly memorable given the context. Sadly, it was not to be.

Using the Sega System 32 arcade board, Capcom put together a fairly simple Formula One (F1) title. The game feels fairly threadbare, with presentation that is incredibly lackluster given the pedigree of the F1 license. It's also very mechanically simple, with few advanced mechanics and an antiquated driving model that couldn't compare with the depth of other arcade racers of the era.

Slipstream is a game that would have been passable had it been released several years earlier, but it was released as a test throughout Latin America in 1995. Even if they had polished it up for a wider release afterwards, it would have been simply too late to truely make an impact. A disappointing outcome for what, on paper, should have been something special.
