Electrocop is the sort of game that looks too good to be true. A fully 3D environment on a handheld system in 1989?! It's an impressive feat to be sure, but one that comes with a number of caveats once you start playing.

The Atari Lynx was a troubled piece of hardware that never reached its full potential. It was extremely powerful for its time and featured a beautiful colour screen. Unfortunately, it was also big, heavy and ate batteries by the dozen. With the Game Boy (and, to a lesser extent, the Game Gear) dominating the handheld market in the early 90s, the Lynx never really stood a chance.

This was a shame, as the Lynx demonstrated some impressive graphical feats during its short lifespan. Electrocop is the perfect game to allow Atari's handheld to flex its muscles, giving the player a 3D environment to shoot their way through. This was in a era where the more powerful home consoles were still mostly dedicated to 2D gameplay, so playing Electrocop on a handheld system seemed like a futuristic marvel in comparison.

In practice, the novelty of the technology wears off quickly and the thin nature of the game becomes quickly apparent. Then again, 'thin' is also an excellent word for the Lynx library in general. If you own the handheld and want to show off what it was capable of in the right hands, then Electrocop is an excellent game to have in your library.
