Act-Fancer | Evolved weapons, devolved gameplay - Blast Processing
The arcade scene was dominated by shoot-em-ups for more than a decade. The combination of fast-paced gameplay with impressive visuals helped the most successful games to become beloved even to this day. There were a lot of less popular games in the genre that, despite their shortcomings, are still interesting to look back on. Act-Fancer is one such game, featuring gameplay systems and aesthetics that are unpolished but still compelling.

With so many classic games in the genre, a shoot-em-up needs to do a lot to stand out. Unfortunately, this also meant that there were many games over the years largely lost to time since they couldn't meet the standard set by the genre's best. Act-Fancer is a good example of one of these sorts of games.
The game itself is actually a spin-off of Data East's Dawin franchise. The other games in the series are both vertical shooters, unlike Act-Fancer which is a horizontal run-and-gun affair. All of these games feature a power-up system centred around 'evolving' the player's ship in various ways to improve its offensive capabilities.
Act-Fancer is a fairly unpolished title that is held back by some major gameplay issues and lackluster visuals. There are some interesting ideas in there that are fun to unearth, but the game itself is just not that fun to play.
