Laser Ghost 👻 | Halloween 2022 - Blast Processing
There are plenty of horror-themed light gun games, but the relative weekness of home consoles versus arcade hardware often got in the way. How did Laser Ghost's rebuilt home version fare compared to the arcade original?

The power of arcade hardware in the late 80s and early 90s enabled experiences that were simply not possible to replicate on the home consoles of the era, particularly the then-underpowered 8-bit generation.
As a result, a game like Laser Ghost became a tricky proposition when it came to porting. Do you bother with a severely cut-down version, or was there a better way?
Sega took a swing with a different approach, rebuilding the game from the ground up for their Master System version. Aside from the name and general gist of the game, almost everything else was rebuilt and totally different from the arcade original.
Unfortuantely, this effort was not fully rewarded as Laser Ghost has significant issues. The age of the hardware still shines through, with choppy frame rates and a lack of satisfying visual feedback when shooting enemies. The controls are also fairly twitchy and difficult to deal with, particuarly if you are stuck using a controler rather than a Light Phaser.
All in all, it's an interesting experience and a fascinating look into the difficulty of porting games during an era with such discrepancies between arcade hardware and home consoles. However, don't expect it to hold your attention for too long!
Happy Halloween 😱👻🎃
